What is a Paradigm and how do we change it?

The term paradigm has its roots from Greek to mean pattern, model or to show side-by-side. Personal development speakers such as Bob Proctor explain this phenomenon as a collection of habits that inhabit our subconscious minds. Therefore, to get certain results from our actions, there needs to be a paradigm shift. So how do we make a paradigm shift?

First, we need to understand how these habits initially grew in our subconscious minds. The nineteenth century philosophical writer, James Allen stated that the mind is like a garden, stuff must grow there regardless of effort. If left unattended, weeds will take root. This is Proctor’s description of paradigm building. He says a paradigm is the programming of our minds, either consciously or subconsciously. If we neglect to consciously plant things there, something will get implanted when you are least aware. Therefore, operating on an unconscious level leaves the mind susceptible to all manner of influences.

Proctor’s take on what mental activity is, turns conventional thinking on its head. Most people do not do much thinking because thinking, he says, is when we activate our higher faculties and take this power that never stops flowing and form pictures of our choice. So, when we visualise the contents of our fridges, that is not thinking but merely the recollection of mental pictures that entered our brains with little thinking. He warns that ‘any idea that is held in the mind, will begin at once to clothe itself in the most convenient and appropriate form available’; also a quote by Andrew Carnegie – meaning that good thought bear good fruit.

So, how to change your paradigm. Through the simple act of gratitude. He suggests that if you write out a list of things you are grateful for, as many as you can master in one sitting, and do this every day for 6 months, your life will be transformed. In my experience, once you start being grateful, it’s difficult to not be grateful.

Write in the present tense e.g. ‘I am happy and grateful now that I have…’

How does this work? Mental adjustment and atonement can be achieved through gratitude. In other words, to make a shift from an undesirable state to a preferred one, we need to atone and being grateful can only ever bring good things your way.
